27th May – 3rd June 2009

Stan was a professional artist and was a highly regarded member of the Nottingham Society of Artists for over fifty years. I am sure that some of the current members will remember him.

He died in 2001 and this is a unique opportunity to view his paintings, sketchbooks, photographs and newspaper articles.

A special feature of the exhibition is the collection of twenty-five original watercolour paintings predominantly set in the Kashmir region of Northern India. Stan was stationed in India with the Royal Engineers between 1944 and 1947 and captured the beauty of the landscapes, mosques and temples in his work.

Back in civilian life, Stan worked at P.P. Payne & Son Ltd as a commercial artist alongside Don Fisher and Hedley Carrington (the original apprentices!).

Highlights of his career included the following:

Exhibiting with the Royal Institute of Water Colours in London. He came very close to being accepted as a member thereof.
Painting two murals for the Nottingham General Hospital (Linear Accelerator Unit) in partnership with his good friend and ex-president of the Society, Fred Glover.
Winning the prestigious Silver Palette Award for the best entry in the 1986 annual exhibition run by the Derbyshire Building Society.

Stan joined the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1947 and derived great pleasure from his membership over the next fifty years, striking up many friendships and playing a very active role. He was Vice-President in 1955 and very proud to be appointed President in 1978.

I believe that his favourite and most accomplished work was represented by his dramatic watercolour landscapes.
