Ken Holt – Fellow of the Society and Secretary of this very popular Friday group gives an insight into the way that a theme is developed and expanded.

‘Art in the Afternoon’ is a group which considers a series of topics, each lasting about three weeks. The first week introduces the theme and reproductions of paintings by renowned artists of similar subjects are displayed. We try to be as wide ranging as possible in the pictures and the artists selected. Sometimes we look at a specific artist or group of artists, or we may consider a technique, such as monoprinting.

In the meantime, it is assumed that members of the group will have researched their own material for a painting, bearing in mind that the object of the reproductions is to act as a stimulus, not something to be copied.

In the final week we finish a little earlier so that as many paintings as possible can be put on display for appraisal.

During the three weeks ending the 13th February, 2009, we looked at The Scottish Colourists i.e. Cadell, Fergusson, Hunter and Peploe. Previously the group has been inspired by The Fauves and it seemed a logical follow-up to review the Scottish Colourists, since they had also been inspired by The Fauves in the early years of the twentieth century. Some examples of the work displayed for appraisal can be viewed by clicking onto the link below.
