Nottingham Society of Artists is one of the oldest art societies in the country, founded in 1880. It has a proud history of distinguished members including Dame Laura Knight (whose paintings are currently featured in a major exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery, London) her husband Harold Knight, Sir John Arnesby Brown, Arthur Spooner), Edward Seago, the poster artist Edward Loxton Knight and the Nottingham sculptor Joseph Else. Some of these artists works can be seen in major national institutions such as Tate Britain, the Royal Academy, and the National Portrait Gallery, whilst other examples can be found in practically every regional art gallery in the country including most importantly Nottingham Castle, City Museums and Galleries.

Nottingham Society of Artists is located in St Luke’s’ House an Art Deco building in Friar Lane just down from the Castle. Membership is open to everyone and costs £75 per year. This membership gives you access to our studio space, where groups who practice Life, Clothed Model, Portrait and Still Life drawing and painting meet six days and four evenings a week. You can go to as many groups as you wish per week and in September and March you have the chance to submit three finished works and a sketch book for consideration by the Fellows of the Society for election to be an exhibiting member, entitled to take part in five of the Societies exhibitions in our attractive downstairs gallery per year.

All members of the Society pay an annual subscription which entitles them to participate in the painting groups and join in any other activities supported by the Society.

Any member wishing to become an Exhibiting (Affiliate) Member should submit 3 FINISHED WORKS together with a small portfolio of about 6 items and the appropriate Application Form (available on the website, at the gallery or from the Secretary). No extra submission fee is required. Work needs to be sent in prior to the Council Meetings on the 1st Tuesday in March or September.

NEW MEMBERS ARE ADMITTED TWICE A YEAR in SPRING and AUTUMN.
